Susan M. Thompson Obituary

Susan M. Thompson, 63, of Chaumont, NY, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2025, surrounded by her beloved family at their cherished lake home in Three Mile Bay.

Susan was born on January 7, 1962, in Rochester, NY, the daughter of James and Jean (Wagner) Jewett. She graduated from Greece Athena High School in 1980. While growing up, her family spent summers at their cottage on Chaumont Bay, where Susan met the love of her life, Mark C. Thompson, a farmer from a couple miles down the road. They met in August of 1979 and the two were married on August 29, 1981, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Clayton, NY.

Susan and Mark made their home in Chaumont, where they raised their family and spent their lives together. Susan began her career with the U.S. Postal Service in 1992 as a clerk at the Chaumont Post Office. She went on to serve in various other post offices in the region, and in 2007, she was appointed Postmaster in Chaumont — a position she held with dedication until her retirement in 2022 due to declining health.

Susan was a woman of deep love for her family and simple joys. She enjoyed gardening and tending to her flowers, spending time on the water, and most of all, being with her grandchildren. Since 1999, Susan and Mark continued the tradition of spending summers at their cottage on Crouse Shores and Three Mile Bay — a place full of happy memories and family time.

She is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Mark C. Thompson; two sons and their wives, Mark W. and Katie Thompson of Manlius, NY, and Andrew L. and Jessica Thompson of Chaumont, NY; and five cherished grandchildren: William, Hunter, Liam, Owen, and Elena Thompson. Her grandchildren were the highlight of her life, she cherished every moment with them whether fishing off the dock or building legos.

Susan is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Patricia Jewett of Three Mile Bay; and two sisters and their husbands, Linda and Richard Pierson of Three Mile Bay, and Mary and Ronnie Bonacci of Rochester, NY. Memories of her will also be carried on through dozens of nieces and nephews as well as friends up and down the shoreline.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, William Jewett, and two sisters, Judy Cubiotti and Ruth Allen.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, October 5th, from 2 to 4 PM at Johnson Funeral Home.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Monday, October 6th, at St. Vincent of Paul Catholic Church in Cape Vincent. Burial will follow in New Cedar Grove Cemetery in Chaumont.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Susan’s memory may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County or the Three Mile Bay Volunteer Fire Department.
