Shirley A. Johnson Obituary

Shirley A. Johnson, 78, of Brownville, NY, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2024, at Rome Memorial Hospital.

Born on August 26, 1946, in Watertown, NY, she was the daughter of Robert and Lillian (Johnson) Olmstead. Shirley was a graduate of General Brown High School. After completing her education, Shirley married Richard Johnson, who was a foreman at Frink and SMI and Director of the Jefferson County Fair for many years. They resided in Brownville for the majority of their married life. Richard predeceased Shirley in 1999. Shirley enjoyed a long career, working as a sales clerk at Sears, in the Jefferson Community College cafeteria, and as part of the kitchen staff at Whispering Pines in Watertown. She also spent many years serving as secretary for the Watertown American Little League.

Her love for animals was a defining feature of her life; she particularly cherished the wild animals that visited her backyard, including raccoons, foxes, birds, squirrels, and an occasional deer or wild turkey. She also cared for many cats over the years.

Shirley is survived by her two sons and their wives, Brett A. and Sandra Johnson of Watertown, NY, and Dane A. and Patience Johnson of Fulton, NY; her granddaughter, Megan Johnson; nieces, nephews, and several cousins.

In addition to her husband, Richard, Shirley was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Jeanette (Olmstead) Gaffney.

Arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter.

In accordance with Shirley’s wishes, she will be cremated. A celebration of her life will take place at the Brownville United Methodist Church on Tuesday, October 1 at 6PM.

Donations in Shirley’s memory can be made to the SPCA. Online condolences may be left at www.dexterfuneralhome.com.
