Shirley D. Sanford

Shirley D. Sanford, 90, of Dexter, NY, passed away unexpectedly at her home on June 6, 2024. 

Born on March 6, 1934, in Dexter, NY, she was the daughter of Paul S. and Eva A. (Hess) Young. Shirley graduated from Dexter High School and worked at Fisherman’s Department Store in Watertown before marrying Ralph Sanford of Dexter on August 31, 1952, at the Dexter United Methodist Church. Shirley devoted much of her life to being a homemaker and later provided home care for the elderly in Dexter. Ralph retired from the New York State Department of Transportation, and passed away on July 4, 2000. 

Shirley enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including bowling, reading, crocheting, knitting, and maintaining long-term pen pal relationships. 

She is survived by her four children: Donald Sanford; Dale (Caroline) Sanford of Dexter, NY; Darryl Sanford of Dexter, NY; and Diane (Brian) Worden of Belleville- Henderson, NY. Shirley also leaves behind several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, three sisters: her twin sisters, Joan Young and Janet White of Dexter, NY, and Frances Parks of Rutland Center; one brother and sister-in-law, William (Judy) Young of Watertown, NY;  good friend and daughter, Patrina M.Conormon, Watertown, NY;  and many nieces and nephews. 

She was predeceased by her parents, husband, and one sister, Patricia Adams.

 Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter.  A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 14, at 1 p.m. in Dexter Cemetery.
