Shirley Oatman Obituary

Shirley "Jean" Oatman, 95, of Glen Park, New York, passed away on June 30, 2024, at Samaritan Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family after being ill for the past two weeks.

She was the daughter of Halsey E. and Ethel M. (Piper) Oatman. Shirley attended Black River High School, graduating in 1946, and then continued her education at the Watertown School of Commerce. After completing her studies, she worked as a secretary for Northrop Ford Motor Company for 16 years. She later became a cashier at Fay's Drugs Store, where she worked for 21 years before retiring in 1995. 

Shirley was a dedicated member of the Brownville United Methodist Church. She was known for her kind and loving nature, always surrounded by family and friends. She loved all flowers including dandelions and buttercups.  She also enjoyed music especially Wayne Newton, Jim Reeves and Eddy Arnold.

Shirley is survived by her three nieces: Cathy (Lon) Nadelen, of Fairport, New York; another niece, Amy (Bruce) Schultz of Dexter; Lori (Dale) Freeman of Dexter; a nephew, Greg Parkinson of Watertown; a niece, Lynn Oatman of Liverpool; great-nephew, Christopher Nadelen and his former wife (Amy McDonald) and their children, Helana and Alexander Nadelen; a great-nephew, Shawn (Mary) Nadelen and their children, Megan, William, and Luke.

She was predeceased by her brother, Milton E. Oatman, and sister, Phyllis J. Parkinson and brother-in-law Alexander Parkinson; her parents, Halsey and Ethel; and a nephew, Mark Oatman.

There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at Brownville Cemetery on July 6 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Methodist Church of Brownville, New York.
