Richard L. Gorman Obituary

Richard L. Gorman, 76, of Sackets Harbor, NY, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2024. Born in North Hornell, NY, he was the son of Harold and Martha (Goodrich) Gorman.

Richard graduated from Vestal High School before being drafted into the United States Marine Corps. From 1968 to 1969, he served in Vietnam as Corporal, earning a Purple Heart, Navy Commendation w/ Combat “V”, and the Presidential Unit Citation. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Dryden, NY, and pursued his education at TC3 and SUNY Cortland where he earned his degree in education.

Richard spent the majority of his teaching career at General Brown Junior High School as a science teacher, where he retired from in 2004. Throughout his career, he was dedicated to inspiring young minds, both in the classroom and as a coach for General Brown High School girls' softball and soccer teams.

Beyond his professional life, Richard was a man of many passions. He led an active lifestyle and was an avid hunter and fisherman, a skilled woodworker, a member of the ski patrol at Dry Hill for almost 20 years, was a member of the Sackets Harbor American Legion Post 1757 and was an extremely loving and proud father and grandfather.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Maureen A. Burns-Gorman; their two daughters, Dana M. Gorman (Denver, CO) and Alana M. Gorman (Gansevoort, NY) and her husband, Steven Gueci, along with their twins, Kye and Emalyn. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Barbara Gorman (Binghamton, NY), and Alice Gorman (Camillus, NY), as well as Peggy Kotlarz (Somerset, NJ), Marie (John) Belli (Brooklyn, NY), and Helen Burns (East Brunswick, NJ); and his adored nephews and nieces.

In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by his brothers, Eugene and David Gorman, and his brother-in-law, John Kotlarz.

True to his dedication to education, Richard donated his body to Upstate Medical University’s Anatomical Gift Program to further medical knowledge and inspire future generations. His final resting place will be Arlington National Cemetery. 

The family invites friends and loved ones to join them in a time of remembrance and fellowship.  A prayer service will be held on Saturday, May 3rd at Noon at St. Andrews Catholic Church located on Woolsey Street In Sackets Harbor.   Calling hours and reception will follow from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the St. Andrews Parish Center.
