Richard J. "Dick" Munk Sr., 82, of Watertown, NY, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2024, at Samaritan Medical Center. Born on September 3, 1942, in Watertown, he was the son of Wilbur H. and Margaret (Bergh) Munk.

On September 7, 1963, Richard married Loretta Backhaus at All Souls Universalist Church in Watertown, beginning a loving union that lasted over six decades. He served four years in the United States Army Reserves.

Richard led a varied and hardworking career. He was employed at Abe Cooper, Black Clawson, New York Air Brake, and the New York Railroad for 13 years. Later, he became a truck driver, working independently and for Anchor Freight Motor Company. He then joined Fort Drum, where he worked at the steam plant before transferring to the maintenance department, retiring after 17 years of dedicated service.

An avid outdoorsman, Richard enjoyed hunting and fishing. He and Loretta shared a love for travel, spending 20 years wintering in Davenport, Florida, and maintaining a camp at Hidden Harbor. While in Florida, Richard also worked at Legoland and SeaWorld, embracing new opportunities with enthusiasm.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Loretta Munk; his son and daughter-in-law, Richard “Dickie” and Julie Munk Jr. of Glen Park, NY; two grandsons, Bryan Munk and his fiance Mariessa Rossi of Limerick, NY, and Eric and Ashley Munk of Watertown, NY; and two great-grandsons, Dylan and Leeland Munk; a great granddaughter, Parker Hooge; and another great grandchild on the way.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his son, Randy Munk, in 2013 and a granddaughter, Krista Marie Munk.

Honoring Richard’s wishes, he will be cremated and there will be no services. A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Brownville Cemetery.
