Patricia Nelson Obituary

Patricia F. Nelson, 81, of Rodman, NY, passed away peacefully on November 24, 2023, at her home where she was cared for by her family, a team of caregivers, and the assistance of Hospice of Jefferson County.

She was born on August 28, 1942, in Albion, NY, daughter of George W. Fischer, Sr., and Gertrude E. (Sanford) Fischer Simpson. She grew up along "The Ridge" with her mother, grandmother, brother, and assorted family members, graduating from high school at the early age of 16 in Holley, NY. Patricia spent a year at William Jennings Bryan College in Dayton, TN before returning to finish a degree at Rochester Business Institute.  She then worked at the Eastman Kodak Company in the Medical Research Department as an executive secretary.

On April 3, 1965, she married John Scott Nelson at the Clarkson Congregational Church in Clarkson, NY; the Rev. Hiram Chapman officiated.  She and her husband settled in Branchport, NY, where they raised three daughters and launched a herd of French Alpine goats under the name of Troll's Bridge. After her children were in school, Patricia returned to her studies at Keuka College, where she graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1981.  Following her graduation, Patricia took a job in college administration at Keuka College. The family moved to Holcomb, NY in 1983, and Patricia's work shifted to the Registrar's Office at Nazareth College of Rochester.  After that, she transferred to Rochester Institute of Technology, where she enjoyed a decade long career as Assistant Registrar.  During that time, she earned her Master of Science degree in Service Management from Rochester Institute of Technology, graduating in 1998. Patricia retired from RIT in 1999, and thereafter she relocated to Rodman, NY, with her husband where she acted for a term as the director of the Volunteer Transportation Service Center, assisted her daughter at the Nelson Law Office, and served on the board of the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired of Jefferson County.

Patricia found joy in her grandchildren and keeping up with family and friends.  She had a passion for architecture and home design and adored her dogs and other pets.  She was the family’s “Schemer in Chief,” always dreaming up new business and project ideas on the back of an envelope. Patricia firmly believed that anything was possible if one set their mind to it.

She is survived by her three daughters, Pamela L. Nelson, Evergreen, CO, Deanna R. Nelson, Rodman, NY, and Barbara J. Nelson, Mt. Airy, NC, her four grandchildren, Grailey L. (Cailey), Bradley P., Ella M. Walton, and Nicholas N. Lattanzio, and one great grandchild, Grayson J. Walton who was born on her last birthday. She is also survived by three cousins, Elsie Jayne Skillington Griggs, Juno Beach, FL, John G. (“Jack”) Skillington, Tampa, FL, and Kathleen J. Skillington Vermillion, Port St. Lucie, FL.

Patricia was predeceased by her beloved husband on April 11, 2011, and her only sibling, George W. Fischer, Jr., who lost his life in the Vietnam War, and both her parents.

Arrangements are with the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home.  It was her wish to be cremated and burial will be next spring at the Sandy Creek Cemetery, Murray, NY, at the convenience of the family.
