Norine Thomas Obituary

Norine E. Thomas, 95, of Brownville, New York, passed away peacefully at her home on February 22, 2024, surrounded by her beloved family and under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County. 

She was born on May 21, 1928, in Canton, New York, daughter of Henry and Ada Hoy Forsythe. Norine graduated from Canton High School in 1945 and later attended the Watertown School of Commerce, where she earned her secretarial degree in 1947. 

On October 16, 1948, she married Billy H. Thomas at the Episcopal Methodist Church in Canton, New York. Throughout her life, Norine was dedicated to her work and community. She served as a secretary for Dr. James Harberson for 15 years, Dr. Harold Livingston for seven years, and then worked at the General Brown Central High School for 14 years, retiring in June of 1991. 

Her husband, Billy H. Thomas, passed away on January 19, 1999. He was employed by Stebbins Engineering & Manufacturing Co. for 38 years. 

Norine enjoyed bowling for 50 years and was an officer of the 600 Club for eight years. She was also an avid golfer and a member of the Rustic Golf and Country Club. Active in her community, she was a member of the Order of the Eastern Stars, Secretaries Association, Golden Girls, and the Brownville Methodist Church for over 50 years. 

She is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Cathy and Bernie Lawlee of Watertown, New York, Tammy and Mark Scordo of Dexter, New York, and a daughter-in-law, Darcy Thomas of Watertown, New York. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, one step-grandchild, numerous great-grandchildren, two sisters, Maxine Stone of Messina, New York, and Susie and Bud Brouse of Florida, as well as many nieces and nephews. 

Norine was predeceased by her beloved husband of 50 years, Billy Thomas, her son, Steven Thomas, step-granddaughter, Tara Van Horn, and two brothers, Donald and Leonard Forsythe. 

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, March 2nd from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service at 4 p.m. with Reverend Leon Van Wie officiating. Burial will take place in the Brownville Cemetery on Friday, May 10th at 1 p.m.. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County or St. Jude’s Hospital. 

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Sears and Dr. Rhode, as well as Hospice of Jefferson County, for their exceptional care and compassion extended during our mother's final journey.
