Michael R. Thompson, 79, of the Town of Hounsfield, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2024, at Samaritan Keep Nursing Home.
Born November 23, 1945, to Ernest and Viola (Woodard) Thompson, he was one of twelve children. Michael grew up in Sackets Harbor and Clayton, attending local schools. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era, earning an honorable discharge in 1968.
After his service, Michael worked at J.P. Lewis Paper Mill before marrying Rene A. Wood on June 28, 1969, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Watertown.
Michael pursued various careers, including working at Co-Wrinkle Fertilizer, he was a baker at Super Duper for many years, and later was a self employed contractor. He owned and operated M.R.T. Construction, and his son Matthew worked alongside him until he retired in 2000.
Michael was a man of simple joys—mowing his lawn, lending a helping hand to haul water for family and friends, and collecting treasures from rummage sales. He had a special place in his heart for his dog, Peku.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Rene, their four children; Andre of Alabama, Matthew (Amy) of Watertown, Shelby Dennison of Ohio, and Shawna Lopez of Ohio; 18 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; his siblings and many nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home. Fulfilling his wish, Michael will be cremated, and no formal services will be held.
Donations in his memory can be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or the Wounded Warrior Project.
