Michael Joseph Roukous Obituary

Michael Joseph Roukous
March 18, 1995 – September 27, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Michael Joseph Roukous, 29, on September 27, 2024, in Beech Island, South Carolina, as a result of Hurricane Helene. Born on March 18, 1995, in Watertown, New York to Joseph and Michelle Mullen Roukous, Michael was the beloved son, brother, and friend to many. From the moment he was brought home to his adoring older sister, Samantha, Michael’s presence brightened the lives of everyone who knew him.

Growing up in Dexter, NY, Michael developed a love for the outdoors, sports, and most of all, his family. He graduated from General Brown High School in 2013, where he excelled as an athlete, particularly in lacrosse and football. He carried his passion for sports with him to SUNY Potsdam, where he played lacrosse and earned a degree in Environmental Science. His work ethic and love for nature led him to various roles, including the Development Authority of the North Country (DANC) and later as a service representative for National Grid in St. Lawrence County.

In May 2024, Michael pursued his lifelong dream of becoming a lineman, attending the North American Lineman Training Center in Tennessee. He graduated just a few months later, in August, surrounded by his family, and quickly excelled in his new role with Forbes Bros. Michael’s dedication and enthusiasm earned him respect from his colleagues, and he took pride in a job he was passionate about.

Michael’s true love, however, was his family, friends, and the outdoors. From a young age, he cherished the time spent hunting with his father, uncles, cousins, and close friends. He was a skilled sportsman, always in search of the next big buck and found solace in the woods. His love for nature was matched only by the love he had for those close to him.

Those who knew Michael will remember his infectious energy, generous spirit, and unwavering loyalty. He shared a bond with his parents, Joseph and Michelle, that was truly special—one built on love, friendship, and mutual respect. He was the kind of son who greeted his mother with a kiss on the forehead and his father with a bear hug, always making them laugh with his signature greeting, "Hey old man." With his sister Samantha, Michael shared a deep sibling bond, one filled with laughter and love.

Michael had a unique ability to form close connections with everyone he met, from his grandparents, with whom he shared precious memories, to his aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends. Whether he was working side-by-side with his grandfather Rouk at the Home Deli or spending cherished moments with his Honey and Pop, Michael's love for family was evident in everything he did. His cousins fondly remember him as the favorite grandchild, a title they now freely admit he earned with his big heart and playful spirit.

Michael leaves behind his parents, Joseph and Michelle of Dexter, NY; his sister, Samantha of Tampa, FL; his aunts and uncles George & Leigh Roukous, Jon & Michelle Roukous, Martha & Micheal Heise, Patrick & Diana Mullen, Daniel & Wendy Mullen and Rebecca Lyon-Mullen. He also leaves behind his loving cousins; Sam (Carrie), Sean, Hannah, Nathan, Jarred, Stephanie (Soni), Rachel (Chad), Ashley (Zach), Ryan (Crystal), Montana, Erin, Kelli and Riley, and several “nieces & nephews” whom he loved dearly.

Michael was all heart, dubbed the "biggest kid," he found pure joy in spending time with his cousins’ and friends’ children. To them, he was always “Cousin Michael,” a title that suited him perfectly. His smile could light up any room, and his playful nature and love of sports led to many competitive and spirited moments. He leaves us now as the official retired champion of his lifelong wrestling match with his cousin Ryan.

Predeceased by his grandparents Roukous & Antoinette Roukous, and Paul & Hellen Mullen, as well as his uncle James Mullen, Michael’s spirit now rests alongside them. His legacy of love, loyalty, and friendship will continue through the memories of those who cherished him.

In honor of Michael’s generous heart, donations can be made to the Michael J. Roukous Lineman Scholarship Fund, c/o Northern New York Community Fund, to support future linemen in fulfilling their dreams.

Michael will be remembered as a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He leaves behind a void that can never be filled but also a legacy of love, laughter, and the gift of unforgettable memories.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, October 9th from 4-7pm at the Johnson Funeral Home in Dexter, NY. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 10th at 11am at the Immaculate Conception Church in Brownville, NY. A private burial for family will follow in Dexter Cemetery.  A celebration of life at the Dexter American Legion will follow, where Michael was a member of the Sons of the American Legion.
