Joseph P. Rizzo

Joseph P. Rizzo, 77, of Glen Park, New York, passed away on November 4, 2024, peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on September 8, 1947, in Watertown, New York, Joe was the beloved son of Philip and Mary Rizzo.

A graduate of Watertown High School class of 1965, Joe continued his studies at Youngstown State University in Ohio, where he earned a bachelor’s degree. After college, he briefly worked in insurance sales before he began his career with the New York State Department of Labor. For 35 years, Joe served as an employment counselor, providing guidance and support to his community until his retirement in 2011.

Joe was passionate about music and played in a local band called The Vibrations alongside his close friends and founding members Joe Grant, Terry Singleton, and Jim Beardsley. They performed in college towns and throughout the Watertown area for several years, leaving behind great memories for friends and fans. After retiring, Joe rekindled his love for music by collecting guitars and playing again, finding great joy in his musical pursuits. 

Joe also had a love for hunting down unique finds at auctions, garage sales and estate sales, where he had enjoyed the thrill of discovering hidden treasures. He deeply cherished his two grandsons, Braedon and Brody, who were the light of his life.

Joe is survived by his son, Jeffery (Heather) Rizzo of Getzville, New York; his daughter; his two grandsons, Braedon and Brody Rizzo, also of Getzville; and his dear companion, Janet Hunter of Glen Park. He also leaves behind his beloved cat, Peggy Sue. Joe was predeceased by his loyal dog, Lucy, who passed away last year.

In lieu of a traditional funeral, Joe requested to be cremated and have no calling hours or formal service. Donations in his memory can be made to the Jefferson County SPCA, 25056 Water St. Watertown, New York 13601.
