Hilda G. Fitzgerald Obituary

Hilda G. Fitzgerald, longtime resident of Glen Park, passed away at Summit Village on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, where she has resided since August, 2023.

Hilda was born on May 10, 1927, in Watertown, the daughter of Harry and Mary Besaw Gerstenschlager. She was a 1946 graduate of Watertown High School.

She married Howard J. Fitzgerald on June 9, 1948, at Bethany Methodist church, Watertown. He passed away on March 26, 2009 at the age of 88. They had lived in Glen Park since 1951. They had enjoyed many summers at their cottage on Clear Lake.

Hilda was a telephone operator for New York Telephone from 1946-1949. She also worked at Empsall’s Department Store from 1964 until 1989 where she served as a buyer and department head for the cosmetic department.

She was also a member of the woman’s Auxiliary of Glen Park Fire Department from 1954-1976 and served as secretary, treasurer, and Chief. She also served as Clerk of the assessors for the village of Glen Park from 1966-1980.

Hilda was a wonderful cook and loved to knit, crochet, needle point, embroidery and especially loved to sew. She enjoyed making things for her grandchildren! She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards. She was her happiest when she was spending time with her family.

She is survived by a daughter, Catherine A. (Charles) Wyman, Ontario, NY, two sons; Michael J. (Susan) and Mark T. (Cheryl) Fitzgerald both of Watertown, NY, she is also survived by her grandchildren: Jennifer Delmaine, Jeffrey Wyman, Scott Fitzgerald, Joanna White, Brock Montgomery, and Ashley Fitzgerald ; eleven great-grandchildren: Leah Fitzgerald, Logan and Miles White, Kaitlynn and Elissa Delmaine, Jeffrey Wyman Jr., Taylor Fitzgerald, Collin Olson, Lucas Van Camp, David and Arnold Montgomery.

She is predeceased by her loving husband, Howard, her brother, Harry Gerstenschlager, a sister, Betty Frear and grandsons, Scott M. Wyman and Daniel Montgomery.

Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral home, Dexter. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the funeral service to be held immediately following at 1p.m. at the funeral home with burial following in Dexter Cemetery, Dexter.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Hilda may be made to Glen Park Fire Department or to the Glen Park Fire Dept. auxiliary 630 Main St. Watertown, NY 13601
