Helen M. Scales

Helen M. Scales, 81, of Clayton, New York, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2026, at her home in Clayton, surrounded by her loving family.

Helen was born on October 30, 1944, in Watertown, New York, the daughter of Clifford Westcott Sr. After completing her education, she married the love of her life, Gerald R. Scales, on November 10, 1962. Together they built a loving home and life in Clayton, New York.

Helen worked seasonally alongside Gerald at the local Big M supermarket, later known as Shurfine Supermarket, in Clayton. Above all, she was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker who dedicated her life to caring for her family.

Helen found joy in reading, designing floral arrangements, playing card games, and spending cherished time with friends and family at their cottage on Lake Ontario. She especially enjoyed watching crime series and game shows. Known for her spunky personality and unwavering dedication to her family, Helen will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

She is survived by her children: Shannon (Debrann) Scales of Arizona; Shawn (Mark) Hays of Clayton, NY; Shayne (Kevin) Lippincott of Depauville, NY; and Sheri (Scott) Soluri of Florida; a daughter-in-law, Teri Scales of North Carolina; and a sister-in-law, Darlene DiGregorio of Liverpool, NY. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren: Kevin (Elizabeth) Bachmann, Shyla Bachmann and significant other, R.J. Marquette, Morgan Hays, Dawson Hays, Justin Scales, Geraka (Brandon) Krajewski, and Aubree Soluri; four great-grandchildren; her sister, Joanne Frasher; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband, Gerald; her parents; her son, Stacy Scales; and her brothers, Clifford Westcott Jr., Gary Westcott, and Duane Westcott; and other family members.

In accordance with Helen’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or services. Arrangements are entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home in Dexter, New York.
