Grant Sykes Obituary

Grant C. Sykes, age 74 of NYS Rte 12E. Dexter passed away Monday morning at 4:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse. He had been a patient since November 14th. Grant was born July 14, 1934 in Newton Falls, N.Y. the son of Ross and Kathryn Myers Sykes. He attended school in Dexter. He entered the Army in March of 1954 and served with the 11th Airborne Co. in Germany. He was discharges as a SP4 in February of 1962. A marriage to Barbara J. Wheelock ended in separation. He worked at Roes Feed in Limerick in early years and then worked for General Brown Central School at the bus garage where he worked as a mechanic's helper and taught bus-drivers how to drive. He retired and later worked part-time for Dexter Cemetery and the Town of Brownville at their transfer site. He is survived by two children and their spouses, Faith and Mark Lustik of Dexter and Kirk and Tina Sykes of Dexter. His companion of several years Frances Bruce and her daughters Julie Bruce of N.Y.C. and Val Bruce of Dexter also survives. He has four grandchildren. Brothers and sisters surviving are Ross John Sykes Jr. and wife Alice of Dexter, Charles and Polly Sykes of New Mexico, Mrs. James Joan Conger of Baldwinsville, Barbara Humiston of Watertown, Betty Beutel of Copenhagen, Sharon Sykes of Watertown, Shirley Marriott of Watertown. A brother Stanley died in 1957. There will be no calling hours or funeral. He will be cremated. Donations may be made to Dexter Ambulance Fund. Arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter.
