Gladys “Julie” (Grunert) Yakabe, aka Reerah, age 89, of Brownville, NY, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2025 at Jefferson County Hospice Residence at the Ellis farm.
Born on April 23, 1936, in Croghan, New York, she was the daughter of Louis and Hazel (Babcock) Grunert. She married Joseph F. Wanta, and together they had two daughters. The couple resided in Florida, where she worked in various government positions, including roles at NASA, Goddard Space Flight Center and within the Computer Science Corps.
Her proudest professional achievement was her work at the Central Intelligence Agency in Virginia, where she served as a systems analyst and technical writer until her retirement. Following her career, Julie moved to San Antonio, Texas, to be closer to her sister, and later, in 2021, to Brownville, NY, to be near her daughters.
Julie was a proud member of the Hillandale Chapter of the Eastern Star. A talented and accomplished musician, she played many instruments, with the violin being her favorite. She also sang in perfect harmony with her siblings and had the unique honor of performing with Nat King Cole.
Known for her vibrant personality and fierce competitive spirit, Julie enjoyed diving, ice skating, and friendly challenges. Though petite in stature, she was known for her boundless energy, sweet nature, and generous heart. Helping others came naturally to her, and she delighted in cooking for large gatherings. She was a passionate collector, particularly of antiques and jewelry, and was known for her social and welcoming nature. She was also a member of the Croghan American Legion.
Among her survivors are her two daughters: Charlene Marie Wanta and Kathleen Lorraine Connor; five grandchildren: Justin and Lisa Durlewanger, Shana and Jonah Loveless, Walter “Wally” and Shannon Parker IV, Bryon and Courtney Parker, and Sean Patrick and Sara Connor; and her great-grandchildren: Axel, Emma, Ava, Dahlia, Violet, Cadence, Cameron, Kiley, and one on the way. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, John and Pat Grunert of Connecticut, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, her son-in-law John F. Connor, and her sister Mary Angeline Marceyes.
Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 2nd in St. Stephen’s Cemetery in Croghan, New York.
Donations in her memory may be made to Maddie’s Mark Foundation and Hospice of Jefferson County. Online condolences may be left at www.dexterfuneralhome.com.
