Darrel Fitzgerald Obituary

Darrel G. Fitzgerald, 65, of Dexter, New York, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2024, with his beloved wife by his side. 

He was born on November 17, 1958, in Watertown, New York, the son of Oakley K. and Ila M. (Slate) Fitzgerald. Darrel graduated from Lyme Central School in 1976 as an all-star basketball, baseball, and soccer player. 

He was a dedicated member of the Dexter Fire Department  where he was a member of the Ramblers. He was also a member of the Sons of the Dexter American Legion for 42 years. He served as the commander from 1987 to 1989 and enjoyed playing softball with them for many years. 

On June 11, 1988, Darrel married the love of his life, Penny L. Mitchell and they became one. They resided in Dexter with their golden retrievers and their cat, "Pumpkin". 

Darrel worked for the town of Brownville before joining the New York State Correctional Facility in 1988. He proudly served 32 years at Cape Vincent Correctional Facility, where he formed many lasting friendships. 

Darrel enjoyed golfing, boating, and but most of all spending time with his family and friends. 

He is survived by his wife, Penny; his brother and sister-in-law, Francis “Butch” and Karen Fitzgerald of Chaumont, New York; two sisters and their husbands, Dawn and Dave Brown of Dexter, New York, and Karen and Steve Mason of Point Peninsula; as well as three nieces, Nicole, Angela, and Nola, and a nephew, Justin. 

He was predeceased by his father, Oakley, and his mother, Ila. 

Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home. Calling hours will be held on Monday, May 20th from 4 to 7 p.m. and the Dexter Fire Department will hold a memorial service at 6:30 p.m.  The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 21st at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by burial in Dexter Cemetery.  A reception at the Dexter American Legion will immediately follow the burial.
