Cape Vincent, NY – Betty L. Reed, 89, a lifelong resident of Cape Vincent, passed away September 22, 2025 at the Samaritan Summit Village, where she had been residing.
Betty was born on March 10, 1936, in Watertown, New York, the daughter of Charles and Dorothy (Cheal) Mason. She began her education in a one room schoolhouse on Point Peninsula and later attended Lyme Central School.
During her bartending days at the renowned "Town Tavern" in Three Mile Bay she met the love of her life Donald R. Reed. The couple married on January 31, 1976, at the Three Mile Bay Methodist Church. After her marriage to Don, she became a bus driver for the Lyme Central School District retiring in July 1999.
Together, Betty and Donald owned and operated Bachy’s Marina until 1991, when they passed it onto their daughter and son-in-law, Jeanette and Michael Countryman.
Betty was a proud and loving mother to a blended family of thirteen children: Richard Wright of Virginia (Julie Wright of Rochester, NY); Jackie Shapley of Bainbridge, GA; Jeanette and Michael Countryman of Chaumont, NY; Jamie Dollinger of Canyon Lake, TX; Jeanine and David Bourquin; Jill and Tim Mason; Reggie and Serena Wright, all of Chaumont, NY; Julie and Rick Janson of Peterborough, NH; Jenny King of Ogdensburg,NY and Donald and Cathy Reed Jr of Jamesville, NY.
She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, as well as her sister, Jean Wiseman of Watertown, NY, and her brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Mary Ellen Mason of Annapolis, MD.
Betty was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband, Donald R. Reed, who passed on October 28, 2023; a daughter, JoAnn Reed; and two sons, Raymond and Robert Wright, and a sister, Barbara Vargason.
She was a member of the Three Mile Bay Fire Department and was actively involved in her local community throughout her life.
As per her wishes, Betty will be cremated. A Celebration of Life will be held in June of 2026 at the Three Mile Bay Fire Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Three Mile Bay Fire Department or the Three Mile Bay Methodist Church.
