Betty Jean (Reynolds) Gill Obituary

Betty Jean (Reynolds) Gill, 97, of Brownville, NY, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 20, 2025.

Betty was born on February 13, 1928, in Philadelphia, NY, a daughter of the late Harry and Dorothy (Weatherup) Reynolds.

She graduated from Heuvelton Central School in 1945 and from Ogdensburg Business School in 1946.

She worked for Attorney Edward Case, Gouverneur for two years.  She was secretary to the District Superintendent and then Business Manager at General Brown Central School and retired in June 1984.

She married George Gill on August 15, 1946, at the Antwerp Congregational Church.  They celebrated 50 years of marriage.

She was predeceased by her husband George on May 28, 1997, and her brother Maurice Reynolds on March 8, 2005.  She was the last surviving member of her generation in both her and her husband’s family.

Betty is survived by her children, Diane Gill, Greensboro, NC; Tom Gill and his wife Debbie, Fairport, NY; and Margie and her husband Leon VanWie, Brownville, NY.  Betty is also survived by seven grandchildren: Kristy (Andy) Makuch, Brownville, NY; Steve (Michelle) Gill,Dresher, PA; Tim (Sara) Gill, Schwenksville, PA; Becky(Sean) Urlacher, Fairport, NY; Jen (Rich) Snyder, Oneida, NY; Christina Anello, Saranac Lake, NY; Melissa (Matt) Huckels, Greer, SC.  She is also survived by 22 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

She enjoyed golf, bowling, walking, reading, spending winters in Myrtle Beach and attending movies with friends.

Betty was a member of the Brownville United Methodist Church and served on several committees, including the Parsonage Committee, the Finance Committee and the Memorial Committee.  She was also an active member in the United Methodist Women.  She was involved in the Brownville Study Club, the Brownville/Jefferson Order of the Eastern Star, the Jefferson Educational NYSAEOP (NYS Association of Educational Office Personnel), the Wednesday Morning Golf League at the Rustic Golf Club and was a member of the Village of Brownville’s Zoning Board of Appeals and the Village of Brownville’s Housing Advisory Board.

A calling hour will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2025, from 11:00AM - 12 noon at the Brownville United Methodist Church (333 Brown Blvd., Brownville, NY), with a Memorial Service to follow.  A luncheon will follow the service at the Brownville American Legion (101 Washington Street, Brownville, NY).

The family deeply appreciates the loving care provided to Betty by the Samaritan Keep Home’s 2nd floor staff.  Everyone was loving and caring to Betty and her family.
