Stephen entered the United States Army on February 26, 1991, and was honorably discharged on August 3, 1998, with the rank of Specialist (SPC). He later worked at HP Hood in LaFargeville until a serious car accident in 2017 left him with a traumatic brain injury. Following the accident, Stephen became a resident at Samaritan Summit Village, where he resided for the past eight years.

Stephen loved fishing with his family, playing cards with friends, watching NASCAR and football, and going dancing. He enjoyed spending time with friends, but most of all he loved spending time with his family. His favorite music included Hank Williams Jr. and Patsy Cline.
