Obituary

Rita A. Joanette, 81, of Dexter, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2026, at her home under the care of family.

She was born August 10, 1944, in Massena, New York, daughter of Elton and Ilene (Jendrew) LaBoy. Rita attended St. Regis Falls High School and on April 4, 1964, married Hubert J. Joanette at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in St. Regis Falls, New York.

Over the years, Rita and Hubert owned and operated several farms, including farms in Dickinson Center, Fort Covington, Canton, and Rensselaer Falls. In 1980, the couple moved to Dexter where they purchased the farm where they continued to reside and work together. Rita helped maintain the farm, worked as a bookkeeper, and took on many responsibilities throughout the years. In addition to farm life, she was employed at the Bombay Shoe Factory, the Fort Drum mess hall, Apollo Restaurant, Fashion Bug, and Walmart.

Rita enjoyed attending the Malone Fair, especially in her younger years, as well as going to concerts, baking, and traveling. She had a special love for animals, particularly the family’s dogs and cats. She also enjoyed helping her husband with their vegetable stand and treasured the time she spent with her family.

Among her survivors are her beloved husband of 62 years, Hubert J. Joanette of Dexter; her three children and their families, Renay Aarons, Robert Joanette, and Larry Joanette of Dexter; and her sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Jim St. Hailare of Connecticut.
