Obituary

Mary Alice Genter, 85,of Brownville, passed away after a brief illness on Tuesday, January 16, 2024,at Samaritan Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on June 26, 1938, in Lowville, the daughter of M. Kenneth and Mary (Valler) Cannan. She graduated from Lowville Academy. Following graduation, she furthered her education at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1959 as an RN. She dedicated her career to compassionate service at Mercy Hospital until her well-deserved retirement. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched through her kindness and dedication.

She married Robert J. Genter on April 8, 1961, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Lowville. After their marriage they moved to the Brownville area where they lived all their married life. Bob was the owner/operator of Genter Bros. Music and Vending. He passed away on March 27, 2019.Mary Alice was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Brownville. She enjoyed watching daily mass and rosary on EWTN,baking, doing puzzles and taking pride in her home. She delighted in thecompany of her grandsons and her great granddaughters.

She is survived by her children: Mary Beth (Kevin) Genter Mills, Dundee, NY; Gretchen (Chris) Mayer, Prosper, TX; Robert (Kelly) GenterJr., Chaumont and Brian (Jennifer) Genter, Ionia, NY ; three grandsons; Elliot Mayer, Joshua (Brooke) Genter and Dillon Genter; two greatgranddaughters: Amelia Elizabeth and Paislee Alice Genter; her siblings: M.Kenneth Cannan,Jr., Indian Lake; Michael Cannan, Lowville; Martin Cannan,Riverton WY; Maureen VerSchneider, Croghan, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mary Alice is predeceased by her husband of nearly 58 years, Robert, her parents, and siblings: Stephen Cannan and Betty Jeanne Shaw.

A graveside service for the family will take place at Glenwood Cemetery in the Spring. Arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home,Dexter.
