James Edward Lawler, 88, of Sackets Harbor, NY, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2026, at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home, where he had been a resident.
He was born on September 14, 1937, in the town of Clayton, the son of William E. and Merle I. (Morse) Lawler. He graduated from Clayton High School and went on to begin his career at Black Clawson. He later joined his family at Lawler Hardware Store in Sackets Harbor, where he served as manager for 30 years.
James had a lifelong passion for speed, engines, and competition where he was recognized for both his skill and competitive spirit.He also loved flying and motor. racing where he spent many years participating in several different venues including motorcycle drag racing and go-karts where he was referred to as “Jimmy the King” Lawler.Beyond racing,
Jim was known as a man who could fix just about anything. He had a natural mechanical ability and spent countless hours in his small repair shop at home, working on motorcycles and go carts for other racing enthusiasts.
Despite his competitive nature on the track Jim carried a calm, easygoing, and humble demeanor. He was an avid reader, especially of World War II history, and had an impressive knowledge of fighter planes and pilots from that era.
He is survived by his two daughters, Brittany Lawler of Tucson, AZ, and Julie Lawler of Newark, NY; nine siblings: Michael and Yvonne Lawler of Bradenton, FL, Kathleen Maring of Adams, NY, Elaine Hutteman of Sackets Harbor, NY, Judith and James Madill of Chaumont, NY, Neil Lawler of Sackets Harbor, NY, William E. and Colleen Lawler II of Brownville, NY, Candace Lawler, Sackets Harbor, NY, and Timothy Lawler of Watertown, NY; as well as several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; his daughter, Jamie Lawler; his sister, Anne Lasek; his brothers, Tommy and Terrence Lawler.
Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home. In keeping with his wishes, cremation will take place, and his ashes placed in Lakeside Cemetery.
Donations in James’s memory may be made to the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home Resident Activity Fund.
