Obituary

Jim Babcock departed Monday morning after a brief illness, and a long rich, full life. Jim set far too high a standard for decency, kindness, and generosity for others to possibly live up to. Jim's life was shared with many fortunate souls: Three children, Jamie Carpenter, Jeffrey Babcock, and Jodi Gaffney were blessed to have him as a father. He was accompanied on his journey by Terry Mannigan, his lifelong best friend, the mother of his children, and his former wife. His siblings included a brother Faye Babcock and his wife Carol, and a sister Nancy Weller. He was predeceased by parents Delbert and Lillian Babcock, brothers Dickie and George Babcock and a grandson William Babcock Mannigan. He doted on his grandchildren and great grandchildren. It would take an encyclopedia to list the friends and family who were loved by Jim. Jim loved his country, but also his Canadian heritage, and honored both. He served his beloved country both in the Army and also the National Guard. He remained active with the American Legion and the Eagles Club to the very end. Jim loved to travel. In the military he enjoyed his time in Germany, but he truly loved Lake Ontario, Pillar Point in particular. He loved the warm winters of Florida, and wherever he journeyed he was greeted with love and friendship, which he deeply returned. A graduate of Watertown High School, a New York State retiree, and Black Clawson employee, Jim's life cannot be measured simply by events. He was a familiar sight riding his vintage MG around Pillar Point, or riding his classic International Harvester tractor. Jim tirelessly and enthusiastically supported the many college basketball teams coached by his son-in-law and grandchildren. Be he Jim, Jimbo, Jimmy, Papa Jim or Dad it was his heart that made yours grow merely by proximity. As we come together to celebrate his life, let us not lose sight of how much Jim loved his life, the people, the places, the laughter, and the happiness. Jim brought a joy to his life that was felt by all who came in contact with him and which will continue to be felt long after his passing. We are all the better that he was among us. Calling hours will be held Sunday, December 13th at the Johnson Funeral Home in Dexter, NY from 2:00-4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project of Watertown.
