Obituary

Gary D. Ritter Sr., 74, of Watertown, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County.

Gary was born on July 9, 1951, in Watertown, New York, the son of Marvin L. and Marion (Langlois) Ritter. He attended schools in Watertown and, following his education, worked a variety of jobs throughout the North Country. He retired from Watertown Linen, where he spent many years performing numerous duties and was known for his strong work ethic. He also enjoyed working in local vineyards alongside his good friend, Brad.

Gary found his greatest joy in spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed listening to old music, relaxing with a cold beer, and cherished the companionship of his dogs, particularly his beloved Pedro.

On September 13, 1989, Gary married the love of his life, Kelly J. Chawgo, at their home in Watertown. Together they shared more than 36 years of love and devotion. Gary was a wonderful husband who adored Kelly, and he was truly her whole world.

Gary is survived by his beloved wife, Kelly J. Ritter of Watertown; his children, Shara Leandry of Watertown, Garry D. Ritter Jr. and his girlfriend, Makayla Rickett, of Watertown, Shalea and Steven Reynolds of Watertown, and Brianna Ritter and her fiancé, Larry Wilson, of Watertown; three grandchildren, Elisa Pesa, Gracie Bixby, and Garry Ritter III; two great-grandchildren, Oliver and Milo Soluri; two brothers, Larry Ritter of Florida and Jimmy O’Brien and his wife, Becky, of Watertown; two sisters and a brother in law, Melia Rudd of New York and Cindy and Don Schmidt of Wisconsin; several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Gary was predeceased by three brothers, Leonard O’Brien, Brian O’Brien, and Michael Tubolino.

Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, June 5th from Noon to 4 pm at the Watertown VFW.

Donations in Gary’s memory may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham Street, Watertown, NY 13601.
