Obituary

Arlene Krake, 96, of Sackets Harbor, New York, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2026, at Samaritan Summit Village, where she had been a resident.

She was born on January 4, 1930, in Marblehead, Ohio, the daughter of Stanley and Mae (Picha) Chapman.

Arlene moved to Sackets Harbor as a teenager and graduated from Hounsfield Central School in 1948. She later attended the Cleveland Institute of Art.

Arlene proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War, serving stateside from 1948 until she was honorably discharged in 1951. After returning home, she worked at Camp Drum as a civilian employee in the Sign Department.

She later worked for the Sackets Harbor Central School District as a teacher's aide in the library, where she enjoyed meeting and helping students until her retirement after many dedicated years.

Few would know, but many would be surprised to find out that she had once tried her hand at roller derby. She loved golf and as a member of Bedford Creek Golf Club, entered and won several area tournaments. Attending Pro tournaments and playing courses in Myrtle Beach with her husband and friends helped fill her retirement years.

She was a lifetime member of the Sackets Harbor American Legion and served as their bookkeeper for a number of years. As a member of the Hounsfield Senior Citizens she was awarded Senior Citizen of the Year in 2022. She also enjoyed outings with the local Red Hat Society.

Arlene was an accomplished artist, especially with watercolors, was a member of the North Country Artist Guild and displayed and sold many of her works.

She participated in bowling leagues into her 90's and also loved fishing, whether it was on Lake Ontario, at her parent's cottage on Sand Lake in Canada or on Lake Champlain with her brother.

Her grandchildren were very special to her and enjoyed many outings of mini-golf, movies, bowling and going to restaurants. She never missed a chance to support and encourage them, attending little league games, swim meets and band concerts, baking them cookies and celebrating every milestone. She loved to select the perfect greeting card and everyone in her life was thoughtfully remembered. on special occasions.

On April 28, 2018 she was included in the Honor Flight Mission 11 to Washington DC as a tribute to her Army service.

Among her survivors are two sons and a daughter-in-law, James Krake of Aynor, South Carolina and John and Cynthia Krake of Henderson, New York; three grandchildren, Thomas Krake, Christopher (Joli) Krake, and Peter Krake; great-grandchildren, Jadeon, Jordan and Morgan; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Mary Chapman of Spartanburg, South Carolina; and several nieces and a nephew.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Edgar L. Krake, who passed away in 2001. The couple spent most of their lives together in Sackets Harbor.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Sackets Harbor Art Center or the Sackets Harbor Fire Department.
