Obituary

Alta J. Bates, 96, of Cape Vincent, New York, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2026, at Iroquois Nursing Home in Jamesville, New York where she had been a resident.

She was born on July 3, 1929, in Cape Vincent, New York, the daughter of Malcolm and Edna (Babcock) Bates. Alta graduated from Cape Vincent High School and went on to attend the House of the Good Samaritan School of Nursing.

Alta dedicated over 40 years of service as a postal clerk at the Dexter Post Office, where she was known for her strong work ethic and friendly presence in the community.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Dexter Grange. Alta was also active in both the Brownville Episcopal Church and the Cape Vincent Episcopal Church, where she shared her love of music by playing the organ and was a Sunday school teacher.

Alta had a special love for her Border Collies, which brought her great joy throughout her life.

She is survived by two brothers and a sister-in-law: Kenneth Bates of Watertown, NY, and Robert and Mary Lou Bates of Cape Vincent, NY; as well as 27 nieces, nephews, and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her five siblings: Malcolm (Elnina) Bates, Elizabeth (Wayne) Millard, Christine Mason, Frederick Bates, and Donald Bates. A sister-in-law, Judith Bates and Alta's longtime companion, Wire Quinlin, also predeceased her.

Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home.  A funeral service will be held at 11am on Saturday, May 2nd at St John's Episcopal Church in Cape Vincent followed by a celebration of life immediately following the service in the parish hall.
