James R. Spencer Sr.James R. Spencer Sr., age 64 of Old State Rd. Dexter died Wednesday morning at his home. He was under the care of his family and Hospice.

James was born February 12, 1946 in Cape Vincent. He attended school in Cape Vincent and graduated from Indian River High School. He served in the Army from 1963-1966 and was stationed in Korea with the Third U.S. Army.

James married Ida M. Heath on August 13, 1966 at the Dexter United Methodist Church. The couple have lived in Dexter since their marriage. James worked as Quality Control Inspector at N.Y. Air Brake and later as Yard Foreman for Suburban Propane in Glen Park.

He is a life member of Smith Savage Post 583 American Legion, former member of Color Guard for the Legion and enjoyed riding ATV with his family at their camp in Barnes Corners.

He is survived by his wife Ida, and sons James and Jacquelyn Spencer Jr. of Watertown, Kristopher and Lisa Spencer of Dexter and Justin and Jennifer Spencer of Watertown. He has five grandchildren. He also has brothers and sisters: Anna Grossnickel of Parrish, Garnet Spencer of Natick, Mass., Linda Stitt of Webster, Daniel Spencer of Perch River, Richard Spencer of Parrish, Robert Gamble of Altmire, Larry Spencer of Dexter, Louie Spencer of Philadelphia, many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brothers Ronald Spencer and Roy Gamble.

Funeral services will be Saturday 3:00 P.M. at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter with Cheryl Gmitter of Faith Fellowship Church officiating. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 1-3 P.M. prior to the funeral. Donations are requested to Hospice of Jefferson County.
